Explosion at Fort Winthrop rocks Boston.
September 7, 1902
The explosion of 18,000 pounds of gunpowder stored in Fort Winthrop kills two men on the island, but hundreds of Sunday sightseers somehow escape injury. Initially, it is suspected that the two men who died caused the blast by carelessly smoking their pipes near the gunpowder. Subsequently, it is reported that the blast was caused by a group of East Boston boys who detonated the powder as a prank.
